Traditions of giving and LEGO DUPLO toys for our readers

When the year comes to an end and the holidays are nearing many of us start to think of other people and spread the holiday cheer by sharing and giving.  I believe we have to think of those in need and the less fortunate all year round and help in anyway we can by giving money, food, clothes or spend our time to better their lives.    

In our family we have lots of traditions when it comes to the subject of "giving" because of our religion and family traditions that we have started.  We clean up all the closets and cupboards in our home at least four times a year when the seasons change and giveaway clothes, food, appliances that we no longer want as long as it is in good condition. This keeps our home clutter free and organized, while these things benefit someone else.  I tend to usually donate the goods to Goodwill, put it in drop boxes or give it to welfare and charity organizations that collect things to send to people who are less fortunate.  I also encourage my children to pass their favourite things to someone they care as gifts.  These are the gifts that mean a lot to the recipient and giver :)  

As a believer of Islam, there are five pillars that we must do; one of the pillars are to give alms.  So giving is an obligatory part of our religion, in which we have to give 2.5% of our income and food/rice to those in need during the month of Ramazan (the 9th month of Islamic lunar calendar when we fast).  Anything given voluntarily with a good heart throughout the year cleans the mind, soul and removes excessive worldly desires.

    Lovely post about the joys of giving. Apart from Zakat which is an obligatory part of Islam, I also make it a point to give as much sadaqa as possible in the form of clothing, food etc. and also encourage my kids to do the same. Earlier I used to donate clothing through one of the Clothing Donation bins but recently I found a FB group called Sadaqa clothing drive run by a sister in Mississauga.
    My daughters would love 5 and 6 whereas I would love to have 3 and 6 for my niece and nephew in Houston since I would be visiting them next month. I am in Mississauga.

    Would love a bit of a rewrite on my previous comment. My little guy would go nuts for this, but no need for all of them, likely keep a box for him (he's into animals so likely the zoo one!) and pass on the rest to friends of his daycare as parting/christmas gifts, as he'll done there about the same time! We live out in Victoria on the west coast!
