Recently, I talked about the importance of Vitamin D for those of us living in Canada, where in winter the UV rays that make vitamin D does not reach us. Research shows that the essential vitamin D3 is naturally made by the skin on a sunny day is essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption to build healthy teeth and bones. This reminded me the importance of giving supplement to my children, as I do not think they are getting much from regular food.
I am careful about the vitamins I give my children because we do not consume anything with gelatine, and I am glad I found out about the Treehouse vitamins. My children were excited that the packaging had fun Treehouse character they like reading and watching about such as Franklin, and Max and Ruby.
Vitamin C is essential for our children's development as it strengthens bones, connective tissues, muscles, speeds the healing of cuts and scrapes on our skin, and increases resistance to infection. It has an important role in helping the immune system fight colds.
The Multi Vitamin with Minerals for children over 3 years does not contain artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or aspartame.
Before proceeding with giving these vitamins to my children, I asked Dr. Joyce Johnson a Naturopathic Doctor with Treehouse vitamins regards to ingredients like Xylitol, vegetable grade magnesium stearate (lubricant) in the vitamins and if there were any animal products.
She confirmed there were no ingredients from animal products.
Regards to Xylitol she said that it is naturally occurring in many of the fruits and vegetables we eat on a daily basis. Once extracted and processed it yields a white, crystalline granule that can be used in any recipe that calls for sugar. It’s good for your teeth, stabilizes insulin and hormone levels, promotes good health and has none of the negative side effects of white sugar or artificial sweeteners. It contains only 2.4 calories per gram and is slowly absorbed as a complex carbohydrate. Xylitol looks like sugar, tastes like sugar, and is the same sweetness as sugar making it the ideal natural sugar replacement.
Vegetable grade magnesium stearate: Magnesium stearate is a form of chelated/preacidified magnesium, and just like other chelated minerals (magnesium ascorbate, magnesium citrate, et al) has no inherent negatives based on it being in a stable neutral compound comprised of a mineral and a food acid (vegetable sourced stearic acid neutralized with magnesium salts). Natural ingredients don’t always smoothly flow through processing equipment and manufacturers need to utilize excipients like stearates to fill capsules or form tablets. Magnesium stearate is the most desirable natural flow agent.
