Denim Basket: Sewn and Fabric Painted

When school's out, it's perfect time for craft camp! Children and parents will enjoy the creative 40 projects in the Craft Camp book published by Lark. The projects include simple beading, sewing, felting, bookmaking and so much more. The book has ideas on how we can create colourful piñatas, eco-friendly mobiles, upcycled necklaces, hats, T-shirts, and many more projects. Children from 6 to 12 will find inspiring ideas in this book. We like the inspiring photographs that were useful when we were trying the projects. I would have preferred if there were more illustrations to accompany the written steps to make it clearer.

The book is separated into four parts. The first section of projects are geared towards younger children. The second part has projects with more steps. The third section has projects that take longer to complete and may need some help from adults. The fourth section is geared towards older children and they need adult supervision.

We tried a cute denim basket project inspired by this book. To make this Denim Basket you will need...

Worn-out straight-legged jeans, denim pants or corduroy pants

Scissors

Thread and Needle or sewing machine

buttons, ribbons, or other decorations

Measure from the bottom seam, cut a piece of the pants leg about 8 inches long and keep the original bottom seam.

Sew the cut edge together with the right sides facing each other to make the bottom of the basket.

Sew a diagonal line across each corner to create two triangles on both ends of the seam.

Turn the basket right side out and fold down the top to make it more stable.

We used the frog stencil that was in the Alphabet Stencil Book Letters and Numbers for all Craft Design Projects book. There are 30 stencils from simple sans serif to ornate letters that we can use to customize soft furnishings like cushions, curtains, and lampshades, monograph luggages, use it in scrapbooks, cards, and even cakes. 

Each stencil is printed on tear-out, perforated card stock, and the sets include upper- and lower-case fonts plus accent marks. I wish the book came with a pouch, so we can easily store the stencils we tear out.

After drawing the frog we used fabric paint and fabric markers to decorate and left it to dry. When doing this part make sure to put a thick piece of cardboard so the fabric paint does not seep through to the other side of the fabric.

I used a craft knife and made small cuts to put the ribbon through. 

Using a safety pin attached to the ribbon, we passed it through the holes.

We took the two ends of the ribbon and tied it decoratively to make a bow.
