We updated a dining set that we no-longer used indoors to make it more suitable for the backyard patio. We used vibrant colours to give the outdoor furniture a more energizing look using Fusion Mineral Paint and by changing the upholstery.
Since the dining set was a dark shade of brown and had a shiny coating, we first sanded it a little before putting a coat of Little Teapot blue shade. After putting the blue shade, we decided we wanted a more greener colour and did a second coat using the Little Speckled Frog minty green shade. For the table we used the vibrant punchy Little Star yellow. Re-covering the cushions at home is quite easy and we have done this a few times and have always enjoyed the results. Laying new fabric on a chair cushion requires only a few material and it is a quick and easy fix to update the decor of the furniture or the space.
We first added a muslin layer before adding the upholstery fabric. This will improve the appearance of the upholstery. We attached the muslin layer to the back edge and then pulled it taut in the front. We attached the muslin layer and the upholstery cloth using a heavy duty stapler.
Fold the excess fabric at the cushion's corners into pleats and staple the fabric, the remaining fabric can be trimmed off.
We sprayed the fabric using the Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Aerosol Sealer before reattaching the cushion to the chair frame. Before drying this spray has a strong scent, so use the spray in a well ventilated area. We found it was quick and easy to use this spray, as it doesn't drip and it dries quickly and clear on the cloth. Using this sealer makes the material waterproof, which is wonderful as this dining set is for outdoor use. This sealer from Plaid is available in Matte, Glossy, and Super hi-shine.
This is a fun and easy project to upcycle furniture we already had. The results of the project gives the patio and the outdoor space a friendlier and brighter ambience.
