Pharmacists and dietitians at select Loblaws and Zehrs locations do more than just fill prescriptions and answer dietary questions. Both the Loblaws Dietitians and the Loblaws Pharmacy team can help us with our nutrition concerns on a variety of topics. When I spoke with a Loblaws store pharmacist, I found out that the pharmacists and dietitians at the Loblaws store work closely together to offer education/ information programs to help us achieve our health goals.
Certain drugs, including over-the-counter medications and some foods, can conflict, for example, with blood pressure medications. Talking to the pharmacist and a dietitian can help clear up our questions, and avoid any potential issues that may arise.
The pharmacy team is committed to providing personalized care and quality service.
Services the pharmacists provide include...
- Professional advice and recommendations on over-the-counter medications.
- Filling and renewing prescription or renew prescription, and sending the details to our physicians. There may be a fee involved, so speak to them beforehand.
- Medication review for potential interactions between prescriptions, foods or alternative therapies.
- Computerized confidential patient profiles.
- Detailed and personalized information with every prescription filled, and personal prescription consultation, as everyone's body functions differently.
- Helping to manage the side effects of medication, and consulting with our physicians about alternative medication if needed, or changing the time of day the dose is taken.
- The safe disposal of prescription medication.
- Administering flu shots and travel vaccinations (for a fee). It is helpful to talk to the pharmacist four to six weeks before going on vacation to make sure you have enough time to get the vaccines needed to avoid serious illnesses.
- Help with using the in-store blood pressure machine and interpreting the numbers to manage medication prescribed by physicians.
- Tips for adjusting to food, exercise or medication for people with diabetes.
We can make appointments suitable to our schedule and speak with a dietitian about our nutritional concerns. The initial consult is about 45 to 60 minutes. Health and diet history are assessed, and personal goals are developed. Based on the assessment and specific health goals, the dietitian will help us make a personalized plan that includes healthy recipes and meal ideas. There is a maximum of two 30 minute follow-up sessions to track progress and provide nutritional support.
Services the dietitians provide include...
- Individual or group grocery store tours through the aisles, and tips to help simplify healthy eating. Topics catered to our need and interest such as eating for busy professionals, healthy meals made simple, eating on a budget, eating for diabetes prevention and management.
- Help with reading product labels and learning to select healthier products. Information about the Guiding Stars rating program that will help us find nutritious food choices when shopping in the store.
- Free individual nutrition check-ups and give tips about weight management and nutrition specific for sports and active living.
- Family nutrition ideas, tips, and recipes to encourage healthy eating.
- The introduction of new foods and recipes to re-vamp our current dietary routines, and to start us on the path to healthier lifestyle.
- Discussion about health concerns and health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
- To understand food allergies and intolerances.
- Help for mothers wanting to appropriately introduce new foods to their babies.
- Meal ideas for picky eaters and school nutrition.
- Help for women experiencing symptoms of menopause.
- In-store wellness sessions, off-site customized workshops, lunch and learns, and health fair exhibits specific to the needs of the organization.
- Events, cooking classes, workshops, and food demos in select locations (some free and some for a fee).
I like that, with their convenient hours of operation, we can easily access the Loblaws pharmacists and dietitians to help answer our questions regarding everyday products as they relate to nutrition and disease management.
