We do a lot of DIY projects using wood and have a decent collection of tools to get the job done. The latest addition to our tools is the Dewalt DCP580B 20V Max Brushless planer. A planer is a really useful tool to have, as it has lots of varying uses. The DEWALT DCP580B 20V Max Brushless planer we are using is the cordless version, and it comes as a bare tool without any batteries. Since, most of our power tools are Dewalt we already have batteries to go with them. It is always best to use 3 Ah batteries or greater, so there is enough power to get the job done.
We find the DCP580B is very much capable to get the job done even though it is battery powered. It handles most jobs with ease just like a corded power tool. The DCP580B has a 5.5 Amp brushless motor which is efficient, as it gives us a longer running time and lasts a long time. As a bare tool the Dewalt Cordless planer weighs at 7 pounds (more with the type of battery used), which is slightly on the heavy side.
It has a nice sturdy padded handle with a comfortable grip and an evenly balanced design, giving us the ability to be in control and use the tool efficiently without feeling the weight.

The DCP580 also has a great safety feature with the addition of an electric brake that stops the rotation of the blade within 1.5 seconds upon release of the trigger. This is really useful as it prevents injury and damage to the workpiece when the tool is set side after use.
Another notable addition is a kickstand located on the rear end of the planer that can be flipped up or down to prevent any gouging of the wood. This prevents the blade from getting damaged. The DCP580 comes with reversible double sided carbide blades. This means if one side gets dull the sides can be reversed to expose the other sharper end to continue using the planer. Since these are carbide blades, I look forward to use them for a long time. Changing the blade is very straightforward. The DCP580 has onboard storage for a spare blade and storage space for the included wrench for blade adjustments and replacement.
With the DCP580 we have control on the amount of wood that can be removed with each pass. This planer can be adjusted in 0.1mm increments to adjust depth of cut up to a maximum of 2.0mm. With these settings it is easy to remove large material from wood or use a shallow setting to get a smoother finish.
It is always best to start at a lower depth and proceed with higher increments, so as not to remove more than the intended amount of material from wood. Overall, I found the depth dial to be fairly accurate and I like how each turn of the dial gives a satisfying click with each increment and locks in place so it does not get adjusted unintentionally.

The DCP580 is very powerful and good at what it does. It removes a lot of wood very quickly, which makes a lot of wood chips to fly out from the dust port located on the right of the tool. Since it flings out the wood chips, I would prefer if a dust bag was included.
This portable planer comes with a strong metal fence that is adjustable allowing us to do consistent planning across the entire length of the workpiece.

So far we have used the DCP580 to get clean smooth edges on 2x4 wood we work on for our DIY projects. The planer can be used when installing doors to get the edges right, as well as to square and flatten old wooden board to make it look new. We love the that it lets us repurpose old wooden boards. We can use the planer to create smoother, shinier surfaces for staining.
Since the DCP580 has a "V" groove in the bottom it can be used for edge chamfering. When the planer is run on the V shaped groove on the bottom it can smoothen sharp edges giving it a finished appearance. We find the DCP580 to be a powerful, quality built portable planer that comes in handy for a variety of tasks.
