Staying at the Long Point Eco Adventures Wilderness Suite

Long Point Eco Adventures located a couple of hours from Toronto is a 37 acre site opened in 2003 by owners Mike McArthur and Dave Pond. It is a fabulous place for the whole family to enjoy a variety of unique eco-adventures. We loved the experiences of zip-lining, doing the apiary tour, stargazing, axe throwing, and hiking during our stay, read the details of each of these adventures and how suitable they are for families on this post.

We also love the beautiful scenic landscapes of Norfolk County, a lovely place to relax and soak in the beauty of nature. Long Point was designated as a biosphere reserve in Canada in 1986 by UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, as it contains the largest area of wetlands and woodlands that remain in southern Ontario. The complex dunes and wetlands have about 20 distinct biotic communities with 700 species of vascular plants, and 380 species of birds.

We had a comfortable stay and enjoyed our glamping experience at their Wilderness Suite; glad we didn't need to bring our camping gear and setup camp so we were able to concentrate on all the adventurous activities they offered. 

The suite has the comforts of modern conveniences as it is equipped with electricity, lights, an alarm clock, Wi-Fi, fan, mini-fridge, running water, beds, and a washroom with an outdoor shower. 

It was the perfect place for our family of four to refresh and relax between all the adventures we participated in. We also loved falling asleep at night listening to the crickets after a full day of fun activities.

There are 15 wilderness suites placed in a semi-circle. We love how the entrance to the suites are located on the outer part of the circle giving more privacy. There are couple of outdoor chairs on the deck, which faces the forest so we can sit out, relax, and enjoy nature. Each of the suites are separated by thick bushes and plants, so we can't see the neighbours. We liked that there is a lot of space outside of the suites, which was fun for the kids to hang around, and play a game of frisbee and badminton.

The suites are made of a canvas like material, and we can open the zips of the windows and let the air circulate during the daytime, we were glad they had a fan in our suite to help us keep cool during hot days. 

At night, we love how it felt cool even with the windows zipped up, they do have extra blankets, and heated mattress pads in case we need them. We found the beds quite comfortable for a good night's sleep.

Our favourite feature was the outdoor showers, a fun way to take a shower at night under the stars or during the day under the warm sun.  

There is free parking close to the accommodations. The staff are helpful in taking our belongings in a golf cart to the suites or camping pods (pictured below). Check-in is at 2:00 p.m. and check-out is at 11:00 a.m. 

Breakfast is buffet style and included with the stay. We can help ourselves to hot breakfast, bread, cereal, fruits, coffee, and tea between 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The breakfast area is located overlooking the Turkey Point Marsh. This is a wetland area on the Great Lakes, and a significant North American area for hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl including Tundra swans, Canada geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, Northern Pintails, American Wigeon, and more in spring and fall. This marsh has been protected and maintained for years by private hunting clubs such as Turkey Point Company and the Teepee Farms.   

Lunch is available to purchase at the Food truck located onsite. They source local farm to table ingredients. There are several restaurants in the area as well. There are barbecues, we are free to use if we bring our own food, they have plenty of picnic benches to sit and enjoy a meal.

We are glad they have quiet time after 11 p.m. so we can all rest and soak up the sounds of nature. For those who want to socialize, they have setup campfires away from the sleeping suites and pods in various areas to have a good time and meet other campers. You can make s'mores if you bring your own ingredients.

We love how they are thriving to be eco-friendly and are committed to help protect the planet by reducing energy consumption and waste. Environmental initiatives that are currently implemented include

• Linen reuse program, minimum towels in the suite; we can easily dry it outside in the outdoor shower. Low-flow water heads in the shower, and rain water collected in vast amounts for the toilet; we can see how they collect it by the observatory. Water from the taps here is not considered drinkable, so bring lots of water for consumption. They have water to drink in the office area if we need.

• LED lights throughout the accommodations. They divert waste from landfills by recycling, saving trees, and tracking energy use.

• Each night a guest stays they make a contribution to the EcoStay Motherland Forest, a reforestation project that provides unique parkland of carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, education, and cultural heritage.

We loved our stay in the Wilderness Suites at Long Point Eco Adventures as it was unique and quite different from our usual car camping or our stays in hotels. It is a wonderful way for families to stay over and enjoy the different experiences that are offered on-site and around Norfolk County.
