Consider this dangerous, but common scenario - a homeowner deactivates a sounding smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm and leaves the device disabled, opening up the entire household to a high-risk potential for undetected hazards. According to the Canadian National Fire Information Database, 80 per cent of fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, often due to missing alarm batteries or expired alarms. This is why, we partnered with First Alert to remind ourselves the importance of Carbon Monoxide and Smoke alarms.
First Alert® is Canada's most trusted brand in home safety and an industry leader in offering families
peace of mind. First Alert develops and designs innovative safety solutions including smart home
products, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, fire extinguishers and more to transform the
way people live. Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2018, First Alert continues to push the boundaries of
what's possible with advancements in technology and detection to help people protect what matters
most. First Alert offers several smoke and CO alarms equipped with 10-year sealed lithium batteries, which we can purchase online and at retailers throughout Canada.
We are using First Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display and First Alert Smoke Alarm in our home. We like that these devices have a 10-year sealed battery, which means we no longer need to remember to replace batteries for the life of the alarms. 10-year alarms eliminate the risk of ever having an alarm deactivated due to battery removal. The tamperproof, sealed lithium battery powers the alarm for a full 10 years, eliminating costly battery replacements and annoying low battery chirps. By the end of its 10 year life, it notifies the need for replacing.

First Alert 10-year Battery Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display features a digital
display that shows the temperature in the room or current peak CO levels when detected. The CO710A uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor and emits a loud alarm if CO levels are detected at dangerous levels.
The convenient peak function captures and allows us to retrieve the highest CO level recorded
in the home. We like that it is designed to either sit attractively on a tabletop or mount on the wall.
First Alert 10-year Battery Smoke Alarm features a non-removable, 10-year battery. It is a low-profile alarm that uses the most advanced smoke sensor - providing the highest level of
smoke detection while minimizing false alarms. It is half the size of a standard smoke alarm and has a simple twist mount and DIY hardware, which is easy to install. The detector has a slim contemporary design for easy integration into any home décor.
Here are some tips...
- The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that smoke alarms be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, inside each bedroom and in the main corridors, and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on each level of the home and in a central location outside each bedroom. 2017 First Alert Survey showed majority of Canadians do not have the recommended number of smoke alarms installed to protect their home from the threats of smoke and fire.
- Once alarms are installed, be sure to properly maintain them by testing regularly. First Alert alarms are equipped with a test button to make this easy.
- Replace batteries every six months. If you have the added benefit of 10-year alarms, you don't need to worry about battery replacement, but it's still important to test the alarms.
- If you can't remember or don't know how old an alarm is, it is best to replace the entire unit.
Installing these safety devices in our home gives us a peace of mind, as it can help us in cases of fire, smoke, and CO. Carbon Monoxide is often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless and colourless gas that
can be produced by any fuel-burning device, such as a furnace, boiler, stove or car. CO poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning in Canada and is responsible for
more than 300 deaths each year. CO alarms are the only way to detect and protect our families from this poisonous gas.
So let's do our part to make our homes safer.
