Importance of Carbon Monoxide and Smoke alarms

We are using First Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display and First Alert Smoke Alarm in our home. We like that these devices have a 10-year sealed battery, which means we no longer need to remember to replace batteries for the life of the alarms. 10-year alarms eliminate the risk of ever having an alarm deactivated due to battery removal. Here are some tips...

• The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that smoke alarms be installed on every level of the home, including the basement, inside each bedroom and in the main corridors, and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on each level of the home and in a central location outside each bedroom. 2017 First Alert Survey showed majority of Canadians do not have the recommended number of smoke alarms installed to protect their home from the threats of smoke and fire.
• Once alarms are installed, be sure to properly maintain them by testing regularly. First Alert alarms are equipped with a test button to make this easy.
• Replace batteries every six months. If you have the added benefit of 10-year alarms, you don't need to worry about battery replacement, but it's still important to test the alarms.
• If you can't remember or don't know how old an alarm is, it is best to replace the entire unit.

Installing these safety devices in our home gives us a peace of mind, as it can help us in cases of fire, smoke, and CO. Carbon Monoxide is often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless and colourless gas that can be produced by any fuel-burning device, such as a furnace, boiler, stove or car. CO poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning in Canada and is responsible for more than 300 deaths each year. CO alarms are the only way to detect and protect our families from this poisonous gas. So let's do our part to make our homes safer.
