The 2018 Mazda CX-5 had an exceptional design which made it one of the most successful models in its lineup. With the introduction of the 2019 CX-5 series, Mazda has taken this model to the next level by adding a Signature top-tier trim level and giving it a power-up by introducing a turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine similar to its big brother the CX-9.
Our test vehicle was the 2019 MAZDA CX-5 Signature edition in a Soul Red Crystal Metallic colour option. This deep red really emphasizes the beautiful and graceful KODO "Soul of Motion" design concept that is prominent in the Mazda lineup. This year's newly added top-tier trim level has a perfect blend of design and premium features.
As soon as the vehicle is unlocked it greets us with new power-folding door mirrors. These are standard on all models on the GT Trim level and above. The mirrors automatically close inward as soon as the vehicle is parked and locked. The interior has been jazzed-up with the addition of new premium materials such as Cocoa Nappa leather seating, Abachi wood trims on the front and rear door and dash panels, and satin chrome accents completing the illustrious look. There is also ambient interior LED lighting that emits a beautiful warm glow at night including LED lights for the front and rear room, cargo area, glove box, and overhead console. The frameless rearview mirror has auto-dimming, which is a nifty feature that reduces the glare of bright vehicular lights behind you.
The tried and tested Mazda Connect Infotainment system has been updated for 2019. Starting with a bigger 7.0-inch TFT display, Mazda has kept with the times by including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibilities. We tested CarPlay which was easy to use. There is a USB port specifically for CarPlay which seamlessly extends the phone functions on the screen. This gives the driver even more options for entertainment and navigation apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze. Apple's Siri voice assistant works right on the display and there is less distraction allowing the driver to stay focused on the road.
Mazda's multifunction commander knob can be used with onscreen functions for CarPlay as well. Apple CarPlay and Mazda's Navigation system can be used simultaneously with the latter handling voice prompts in the background. In addition to Apple Carplay and Android Auto, Mazda Canada has included a 5-Year Complementary SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link Subscription with the GT and higher trims. The 5 year complimentary subscription does not include Satellite radio.
Keeping both driver and passengers in mind, the 2019 CX-5 has heated front and rear seats with 3 heat settings, and a heated steering wheel, including heated mirrors and a built in windshield wiper de-icer.
The new 2019 CX-5 Signature really excelled in our winter test drive. Along with the introduction of the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo (DPT) engine to the signature edition comes plenty of power. Dynamic Pressure Turbo is designed to boost power at lower RPM by restricting the exhaust flow helping air move quicker through the engine. With the smaller body of the CX-5, you can actually feel the vehicle respond to acceleration and steering.
To supplement the powerful engine, Mazda's G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) technology is included giving precision steering response. It detects changes in engine output to shift weight to the front tires whenever the wheels are turned. Mazda i-ACTIV AWD technology assists the CX-5 in varying terrain and weather conditions. i-ACTIV AWD uses 27 sensors to monitor outside temps and windshield wipers, acceleration, steering angle, and braking patterns. Using these factors i-ACTIV AWD can respond to any situation by applying torque to the rear wheels for traction when needed. These made for a smooth drive in wintry road conditions and the vehicle was responsive and stayed on track without sliding to the side especially on wide turns.

During our drive in heavy snow we got a warning saying "System Disabled Due to Poor Outward Camera Visibility," but it went away after a few minutes when the snow cleared off the windshield sensor.
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature Edition is a pleasure to drive. It is a culmination of a beautiful design concept blended with the latest technology, which gives the driver and passengers a memorable driving experience.
