We built a new wooden fence in our garden last summer using treated green wood, which has a bright refreshing feel. We gave the new fence boards time to dry out over the summer before applying a clear coat sealer to protect the wood from moisture. We used RESTORE® 12x Clear Coat Transparent Stain and Sealer. We went with the clear finish because we liked the original colour of the fence boards. This sealer can be tinted into six different colours.
This stain is very thick and needs to be thoroughly mixed, so we used a drill with a mixer attachment to help us get the smooth overall thickness. We found that the sealant needed to be mixed occasionally while we were applying it, as it turned milky. We really like that this sealer needs only one coat. Using a wide synthetic paint brush to apply the stain made it easier to get long strokes without overlapping, so we were able to avoid uneven marks on the middle of the boards.
As the sealant dries, it will become clearer giving the fence a shiny glassy look. This transparent sealer is supposed to be 12 times thicker than other sealers in the market. The coating helps prevent algae and mildew, as well as protect the wood from greying because of its UV inhibitors.
The coating we applied did not get wet for a week, as it rained after a week of applying the sealer. Since then we have had numerous occasions of rain and snow, in which we noticed that the sealant prevented the wood from absorbing the water, in fact it repels the water. We also applied this transparent sealer on our wooden steps, and it helps to keep the water off the steps and it is much easier to clean after the rain.
