Wood is one of our favourite material to work with! From making designs with the scroll saw, wood burning to making furniture and other home decor it seems like we are continuously buying wood.
We had a fun time giving wood burning a try when we visited Science North in Sudbury, Ontario and recently have been practicing using the wood burner. We have been getting inspiration for this craft from a few books and videos. The Basic Wood Burning book by Sue Waters is good for beginners who are interested in trying their hand at the art of wood burning. The author guides beginners through six beautiful wood burning projects that includes lettering techniques, created floral displays, mountain and lake-side scenes. There are explanations about the tools, techniques and patterns necessary to create these works of art. The photographs and straight-forward descriptions are helpful.
The Home Woodworker Series: Home Workshop Setup – The Complete Guide Paperback by Jim Harrold is a book that teaches how to setup a workshop in a cleaned out garage or a freed up space in the basement.
The book shows how to make an efficient, safe, clean, and comfortable workspace perfect for working with wood. The book starts off with a workshop planner, tool templates, and gridded worksheet to lay out a customized floor plan based on the dedicated space, and then to decide on other needs such as flooring options, lighting and heating, dust collection, outfitting with compressed air, and fire safety. The guide walks through a garage shop makeover, providing detailed plans for space-saving components like carts, cabinets, and racks.
