We love books that give detailed explanations, especially useful when we are trying to master hands-on activities. We have been reading and learning about two of our favourite hobbies sewing and knitting from two new DK book: Sew Step by Step and Knit Step by Step.
Sew Step by Step helps us make, mend, and customize different clothes. This beginner's guide is filled with photographs that will help us with machine sewing and features more than 200 step-by-step techniques. If you've never used a sewing machine before, or if you want to refresh your skills, Sew Step by Step gives the essentials by taking the readers through the basics, including the features of a sewing machine and the qualities of different fabrics.
This simple handbook will us make and mend our own clothes and home furnishings as it includes how to insert collars, sleeves, and pockets into garments, and how to customize them with delicate finishing touches, including appliqué and quilting.
Making bias tape for a dress.
The section that explains how to read patterns and adapt it depending on different body measurements has been useful for us, among other explanations that are accompanied with photographs. The book guides how to find the right fabric for every project with an easy-to-use guide to different materials.
Knit Step by Step
The essential beginner's guide to knitting successfully has more than 200 illustrated knitting stitches and techniques including using circular needles and creating structural effects. This book takes us through simple skills, including how to knit, purl, cast on and off. This simple handbook helps decode knitting patterns and build intricate designs with eye-catching rib and cable stitches, structural effects, and multicoloured Fair Isle and intarsia techniques. There are explanations for different techniques including how to alternate different colour yarn, different methods of casting on, knitting picots, and more. I have made a row of knitted picots to add to an upcoming cushion cover project.
Knit Step by Step has 10 knitting projects such as creating a simple scarf, eye-catching home decor, and other items to put our knitting skills into practice. This easy-to-use, fully illustrated book is ideal for beginners picking up their first pair of knitting needles and for those experienced knitters looking to build their skills and refresh techniques, there is lots to learn from this book.

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to win these Sew Step by Step and Knit Step by Step books because my 13 year old daughter would love them! She really wants to learn to sew and knit, and was supposed to be doing sewing at school this term. She was very excited, as she loved her sewing class last year and was excited to learn more, but with school being out she'd like to try it at home instead. I have a machine, and a box of fabrics I never used, so she'd love to get started! She's already taught herself to crochet, and knitting is next on her list.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win so I could learn more about the hobbies that I enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win these books to brush up on the skills I had when I was younger so that I will be ready to teach my granddaughters the skills my Mom taught me
