Touch-free tech is any type of technology that can be controlled without touching it. Throughout the pandemic, such technology has been important for reducing the spread of the viruses. However, touch-free technology has many uses beyond this - it can help when you’ve got messy hands from cooking or arts and crafts, or it can help when you’ve got your hands full from carrying shopping or a baby. Below are some of the different forms of touch-free technology and their cool uses around the home.
My children decorated this motion sensor hand soap when they were little a few year ago.
Motion-sensing tech
Motion-sensing technology has been used for decades. This is technology that is triggered by moving your hand or your body in front of a sensor.
Such technology can prevent people touching surfaces with grubby or germ-ridden hands. Touchless soap dispensers and automatic sensor taps for instance can allow people to wash their hands without having to touch any surfaces first. Public bathrooms commonly use these, but they could also be a great feature in a home bathroom if you've got messy kids.
Automatic doors are another form of motion-sensing tech that are sometimes used in commercial buildings but rarely used in homes. A more popular form of motion-sensing tech that can be used in both commercial and residential buildings is motion sensing lighting. Placing motion-sensing lights outside your home can be a great way to illuminate your home at night - such lighting could help you to more easily find your keys in the dark, plus it could be a deterrent to burglars. By opting for motion-sensing lighting instead of permanent lighting, you’ll save money on energy.
Voice command
Voice command technology has become a lot more popular in the last decade. Such technology could allow you to operate technology with your voice when your hands are busy.
Computers, smartphones, smart TVs and games consoles now commonly have voice control features. However, the most popular household gadget controlled by voice command is the smart speaker. These speakers can be used to select music or search questions on the internet hands-free. Many other smart gadgets can be controlled by voice command such as smart heating, smart lighting or even smart blinds. With all these gadgets in your home, you could technically turn on the heating, switch on the lights in your bedroom and open the blinds all using your voice.
Facial recognition
Facial recognition technology is a relatively new form of touch-free tech. Many people are only just now getting facial recognition technology on their smartphones as an alternative to a password or a fingerprint scan. This could allow you to open up your phone without using your hands if necessary.
Other new devices such as smart TVs and computers can also be set up to use facial recognition. You can even install smart locks in your home that are opened by facial recognition.
Smartphone control
Smartphone-control technically isn’t touch-free, however it can be a way of controlling other devices in your home without touching them. By adopting smart technology within your home, you can control this technology by using your phone as a remote. This could include using your phone to adjust the heating or using it to open the garage door.
Most smart apps even allow you to control smart objects in your home when you’re not even at home. For instance, if you want to turn on the heating on your commute back from work so that your home is warm by the time you get in, you can do so via your phone providing that you have a smart heating system.
Our family has been fully embracing touch-free technology due to its numerous conveniences.
