Rituals and routines are often the glue that holds families together. Every family has their own version of this code. However, this code could be the very thing that tears a family apart. The Family Code is a well-written novel by award-winning Toronto-born author Wayne Ng, which I enjoyed reading. This quick read is written in the perspective of two characters; Hannah and Axel.
The story is about a single mom whose own family upbringing threatens her son and daughter, proving more that intergenerational trauma is a hard reality to come off of. Wayne has poured his decades-long experience as a preeminent social worker into his nuanced portraits of the characters. The Family Code reveals not only the perils of parenting, but also provides a wholly convincing take on the longing and vulnerability of children. The book questions who is brave enough to break the code.
Gritty and uncompromising, The Family Code is set in the Ottawa region and Halifax and centers
around the troubled life of Hannah Belenko, a young single mother of two young children trying to get by against
innumerable odds, some of her own devising. Hannah was raised by the strict family code of loyalty and silence, and she must crack this and the brutality of past traumas in order to be free or else lose everything. Hannah finds herself ruling her own family by the very code she loathes.
When she loses her daughter to the state and her boyfriend threatens her, she flees from Ottawa to Halifax with her six-year-old son, Axel. She bulldozes her way through everything and schemes to protect Axel, who flounders in the chaos. He begins to doubt his mother and her dream of a way out while she continues to be driven
by desperation to survive while hanging on the rarest of gifts – hope!
With unvarnished and high-voltage prose, The Family Code unabashedly reveals the power and perils of parenting, but also the longing and vulnerability of children. In recognition, Ng dedicated The Family Code to the many children and families he has worked with over the years, who trusted him with their stories and
showed astonishing resilience and humour in the face of adversity.
This novel offers an unflinching and refreshing look at some of the people around us. This is a touching story that is well worth reading to understand different families and feel empathy towards those who are frequently marginalized.
