Murphys Point Provincial Park is about 3 hours from Toronto, located 20 minutes south of Perth, Ontario on Big Rideau Lake. This is part of the historic Rideau Waterway. As we spent 3 days and 2 nights at this park, we really enjoyed the camping site and the many hiking trails.
There are different sites for car, RV, and group camping. The sites range in size, some were up the hill and some down. We liked that the comfort stations were close by. We camped in a non-electrical site on Hogg Bay's Ash Hill. This site is good for tents or small trailers. There were a lot of mosquitos after the rain, so don't forget the bug spray and after bite!
The Silver Queen Mine trail is an hour and half guided tour that leads inside the mica mine and the bunkhouse. Register at the gatehouse or call the park, as it gets full and there is a limit of how many people can go on the hike.
We did all the hiking trails and enjoyed the serenity and the quiet scenery of the park. There is a great mix of wildlife habitat from forests, wetland, old fields, a pioneer cottage, and lakes.
We spotted a few wildlife in action while hiking - a busy mink hunting for breakfast in the lake and enjoying it, a garter snake, lots of birds, and deer. We also heard lots of animal noises in the night from owls to raccoons. So make sure to pack everything inside the car before calling it a night.
McParlan House Trail is an easy trail that leads to the McParlan House, which was an early 1800s sawmill, farm and then a pioneer cottage turned into a small museum.
We drove 3 km from the campground to check out the Lally Homestead trail, this easy 800m loop goes through abandoned farm fields with lots of wildflowers.
Point Trail is a moderate and the longest trail at this park. It is a 5.5 km loop, which has lots of wildlife and the terrain has lots of hardwood roots, rocks so taking a hiking pole would be useful when hiking this trail.
This trail leads to the tip of the peninsula which stops at the sandy beach and has some beautiful views of the Big Rideau Lake, which is where we spotted the mink. The Sylvan trail connects to the Point Trail if you want to make the hike a little longer, it is an additional 2.5 km loop.
Overall, Murphys Point Provincial Park is a good Ontario Park to spend time with teenagers!
We found the CLIF bars convenient to take during our travels. It is a good filling snack to enjoy any time of the day. These energy bars would also be convenient as school or office snacks.
