We had a wonderful time exploring Ferris Provincial Park located in Northumberland county in the small town of Campbellford. The park is a two hour drive from Toronto. It is connected to Ranney Falls, which has a colourful and exciting view from the lookout. We encountered garter snakes on the easy to explore trails.
We took the easy Ranney Falls Trail to walk over the Ranney Gorge Suspension Bridge and to see the falls. The 300 foot long bridge hovers 30 feet above the gorge. There are different vegetation at this park, which would look even more beautiful in Fall. There is a lot of parking where the trails meet. This park also has camping.
Attractions in the area include the Giant Two Dollar Coin at Old Mill Park. This toonie with the polar bear design is 27 feet high and 18 feet in diameter.
We also visited Presqu'ile Provincial Park, which is is on the way to Ferris Provincial Park. This park is located in southeastern Northumberland County on the north shore of Lake Ontario near the town of Brighton.
There are a few hiking paths. The Owen Point Trail with the natural beach is closed in order to not disturb migrating birds and it has waterbird colonies with nesting grounds.
The Pioneer and Newcastle Trails are both long trails, however we found the markings not as easy to follow and both trails go on the roadways connecting to the campgrounds.
The Lighthouse Foot Path is easy and gives access to the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre and we can see the lighthouse.
There is a Nature Centre that teaches about the area as well as about the fossils that can be found on the sandy beach by the hiking paths.
There is a separate long beach with lots of parking and changing stalls. The beach has calm waters and dogs are not permitted.
