Unravelling the mysteries of the universe has been a human fascination since the beginning of time. From recording observations of stars, planets, and celestial sights to space travel, and even ideas of living in Mars has crossed the human mind. This book is a beautiful way for us to learn about the things we've wondered by understanding the science behind the mysteries. 

Art, Space, Spies and Giveaway

We have been reading two DK's Visual Encyclopedias to gain knowledge about different types of Art and to ponder about Space. We have also been learning about the history of spies from Ultimate Spy. 

Learning the history of inventions and giveaway

Summer learning continues with these awesome titles from DK publishers; Smithsonian History!, 1000 Inventions and Discoveries, and Inventors. It is fun to read educational books accompanied with illustrations, as it makes the content interesting and inspiring.

LEGO Harry Potter and LEGO Ninjago

We enjoy LEGO books because they give background to LEGO stories and characters. This brings life to children's imagination, as they build and make their own version of the stories. LEGO Harry Potter Build Your Own Adventure and LEGO NINJAGO Choose Your Ninja Mission were recent books my son enjoyed reading, building, and recreating stories using his imagination.

Learning the origins of board games, illusions, journey, and math

We love playing board games and have a few family favourites. As children, we have played lots of different board games from monopoly to mancala, and made sure to introduce our children to board games at a very young age. A few years ago, we made a wooden convertible storage cart just to keep our games. We believe most board games are a wonderful way to socialize and connect, and they have become part of our lifestyle. Over the past decade, we have documented a few board games on CreateWithMom. When we saw the Board Games in 100 Moves by Ian Livingstone, we were curious to discover different board games and their origins. 

DK books about Science, Tech and the World

We love learning from DK books! The wide variety of DK books from different subjects interests us because they are colourful and have an abundance of facts written in an inspiring way. Here are a few of our recent favourite books from DK Canada - Explanatorium of Science, Through the Animal Kingdom, and Tech Lab. 

Self Care and Learning from DK books

We have been reading a couple of Self Care books from DK Canada - Sleep and Trigger Points. These books have been useful to think of what we should change to better take care of ourselves. My children read a few interesting DK readers - The Story of Civil Rights, I'm an activist, Sports Legends, and Festivals and Celebrations that has lots of useful general knowledge.

Getting Ready for a New School Year

Having books to refer to for school projects, the curriculum, and hard to grasp ideas will help ease some difficulties we may face in the school year. We have been checking out couple of books from DK Smithsonian, a year by year guide about History and Science, as well as three books from the Help Your Kids series; Geography, Music, and Computer Coding.

The Big Ideas series from DK is available in a variety of topics such as religion, economics, psychology, philosophy, sociology, ecology and more. It explains hard to grasp ideas in simple ways with pictures, info-graphs, timelines, definitions, and creative typography. The format of the Big Ideas Simply Explained series is easy to navigate to learn about the different concepts on each of the topics.

We enjoy books that are not only fun to read, but also educational. DK findout! books are an excellent way for children to get interested in topics that will be useful for their common knowledge. We like that DK is introducing topics that children will come across in their curriculum and beyond. The vibrant pictures, simple explanations, and facts make it easy to remember the main points of each topic. 

Understanding Food and Spices

Over the years, I have experimented with different spices while cooking and baking - either adding or swapping it to get flavours we enjoy. Reflecting back, I feel my journey to understand, know, and appreciate different spices was because of my opportunities to experiment and include it into our meals. This has made me feel comfortable in deciding which flavours would work well, and which spices I want to add.

We love Smithsonian guides because they are a well of knowledge. It is always interesting to read about and get to know the wonders of nature. The Smithsonian Animal book is updated and revised with photos and descriptions of over 2,000 species and habitats from around the world.

We love DK Eyewitness books, as they are a wealth of knowledge. This series of books are good educational resources. It comes in handy when doing homework, research projects, improving reading of reluctant readers and English as a Second Language students. Importantly these books satisfy the minds of curious children, as it answers their questions.
